Non-fungible tokens (NFTs) are quickly becoming the standard when it comes to blockchain-based collectibles. However, many people still don’t know what they are or why they’re so important. Non-fungible tokens are one of the newest innovations to blockchain technology. It allows people to create their own digital collectibles that can represent real-life assets or values. It is also a secure way to store those assets on a distributed ledger. Since their inception, thousands of NFTs have been bought and sold. But a few special ones will remain in our collective memory for a while, whether it is for their artistic value or for the incredible amounts of money they were sold for. Find out more about them and why they are so well known and popular in this article. Let’s get started!

Beeple, Everydays – The First 5000 Days

In March 2021, a motion artist and graphic designer by the name of Beeple, a.k.a Mike Winkelmann sold a one-of-kind piece to a global collector in exchange for $69.3million in cryptocurrency. The piece is a collage the artist made by adding one artwork a day for, you've guessed it, 5,000 days. Winkelmann created one piece of digital art a day since May 1st, 2007. The art piece, minted into NFT, shows the growth of Beeple in visual art and his incursion in 3D art and color technique evolution.

Mars House - Krista Kim

The piece is a digital 3D model of a futuristic designed house, with neon lights and an ambient soundtrack composed by Jeff Schroeder of Smashing Pumpkins. The buyer of this vanguardist art piece was the foundation, Art on the Internet. The artist Krista Kim sold the first digital home on SuperRare for 288 ETH –at that time, the equivalent of half a million dollars.

The Merge - Pak

Time to talk about the most expensive NFT ever sold. The Merge’s auction was done by Nifty Gateway in a shared format. The price for each share started at $299 for buyers who already owned work from the anonymous artist Pak. Once the auction went public, the price per share skyrocketed to $525 and increased $25 every hour. By the end of the auction, the NFT formatted art piece had 28,000 owners and a total net worth of $91.8 million, breaking the record for the most expensive piece of art ever sold, a record held by the American artist Jeff Koons with the sculpture “Rabbit”.  Each of the 266,445 units of the piece is meant to be combined into a group-owned digital collage.

Ross Ulbricht - Genesis

One of history’s most famous NFT collectibles was created by Ross Ulbricht, owner of the platform Silk Road. In 2015, Ulbricht was sentenced to life imprisonment at the age of 31 on multiple felony charges related to running an underground website called Silk Road where anyone could buy and sell illegal drugs using bitcoin as payment. “Genesis” is a collection of art pieces that Ulbricht created behind bars and turned into NFTs. The first item of this collection is a graphite pencil drawing entitled “Perspective.” The proceeds from the auction were destined to a fund committed to the liberation of Ross Ulbricht from prison.
